Memorabilia

LIMITED EDITION POSTER NUMBER 1 - THE FIRST SIGNED PRINT OF A SERIES OF 2000 WORLDWIDE. The event took place at Alexandra Palace Way, Wood Green, London, N22 7AY, in the United Kingdom from Tuesday 17 July 1979 — Sunday 22 July. It featured a fantastic line-up of talent which the radio station was able to arrange for this five-day open-air festival. In 1979 the Jazz Festival featured B.B. King, Dizzy Gillespie, Muddy Waters, Dave Brubeck and Chuck Berry. Despite a fire in 1980 destroying most of the building Alexandra Palace continued to host the sound of the era, bringing in punk with Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Slits, The Jam and The Stranglers were hosting their last gig. So this original framed poster has true provenance; it is a piece of art which evokes the feelings and sounds of an event that took place in green fields in the shadow of a magnificent building that was also the place the first-ever radio broadcast took place in England. The poster is signed and numbered by the artist Mick Turner; it is an original collector’s item commemorating a great jazz event at a time when open-air festivals in the UK were coming into being, largely due to the courageous efforts of the American producer and promoter George Wein and the local producer and promoter Andy Hudson. Thanks, guys it was a great event; I know, I was there handling all the concessions and merchandising and actually published the event programme and produced the posters.
